Google trims another 200 from cloud sales teams

The reductions follow a broader reorg around AI-first product lines announced earlier this year.

Alphabet's Google Cloud unit eliminated roughly 200 positions this week, the second small-scale reduction in the cloud sales organization in the past four months. The cuts are concentrated in mid-market sales, sales operations, and partner management functions, and follow a broader reorganization announced in February that consolidated several previously separate sales teams under a single global structure organized around AI-first product lines.

Google has framed both rounds of cuts as 'role reshaping' rather than overall headcount reduction. The company is actively hiring AI specialists, solution architects, and customer engineers focused on its Gemini and Vertex AI products — positions for which there is intense competition across hyperscale cloud providers. Several of the affected employees have been informed that they are eligible to apply for these new roles, though the geographic and skill profile of the openings does not always match the displaced workforce.

The cloud business has been one of the strongest growth stories at Alphabet over the past three years, with year-over-year revenue growth consistently in the high 20s and operating margins finally turning solidly positive in 2024. CEO Sundar Pichai, on a recent earnings call, characterized cloud as 'the most strategic part of Alphabet over the next decade' and emphasized that the company's investment in cloud infrastructure and AI tooling would continue to grow.

The mid-market sales cuts reflect a broader reality across enterprise software: the AI-driven uplift in productivity for sales teams is real and measurable, particularly in the early stages of the funnel. Several enterprise software companies have publicly described cuts of 10–20% in sales development representative roles over the past two years, with much of the early-funnel work shifting to AI-augmented outreach and nurture systems.

Severance terms for affected employees include a minimum of 14 weeks of pay plus two weeks for each year of service, continuation of health benefits, and a one-year non-compete waiver — meaning departing employees can immediately accept positions at competing cloud providers without legal restriction. Several of the affected sales leaders have already publicly indicated they have accepted positions at AWS, Microsoft, and various AI-native infrastructure startups.

The cumulative impact of small-scale, ongoing reductions at Google has been significant. Alphabet's overall headcount has been roughly flat over the past two years despite continued strong revenue growth — a sharp departure from the 2018–2022 period, during which headcount roughly doubled. CFO Ruth Porat has repeatedly emphasized the company's commitment to 'durable cost discipline' alongside continued investment in core AI and cloud capabilities.

Industry observers note that the recent pattern of frequent, small-scale cuts at major technology companies — rather than less frequent, larger reductions — is partly a function of regulatory and reputational considerations. WARN Act notices in California and several other states are triggered at specific thresholds, and managing reductions to stay below those thresholds limits the regulatory and PR overhead.

For affected employees, the practical implications are familiar: relatively generous severance, immediate access to a healthy job market in cloud and AI roles for those with the right skills, and the same challenging time-to-rehire dynamics that have defined the technology labor market for the past two years for those whose roles have been more affected by AI productivity gains.
